“TEACHING CREATION ON A SECULAR CAMPUS: COMFORT FOR SINNERS OR EXCUSE TO SIN?” When we believe God’s Holy Word we receive comfort and joy. “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul” (Psalm 94:19). We insist on the truthfulness of God’s Word not merely for the sake of being right, but because it is the comforting Word of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. But the devil wants to rob Christians, especially the youth, of all the comforts God’s Word speaks to us from Genesis to Revelation. Then, when God’s Word is rejected in part or whole, it becomes the excuse for the hardened heart to carry out its sinful desires. Pastor Hayes will explore how God’s Word, and Genesis in particular, is used as a comfort for believers and misused as an excuse to sin by unbelievers and those on the path to making shipwreck of their faith. The Rev. Joshua J. Hayes is campus pastor at University Lutheran Chapel at CU, Boulder. He formerly served as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Kramer, NE from 2011–2016. He is a 2011 graduate of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and holds an M.A. in Greek and Latin Classics from Washington University in St. Louis.
